Hello everyone!
The AIDD (Awareness of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities) student group is excited to partner again this year with Night OWLS, a respite program for children with special needs. On Tuesday, September 20th from 6:30-8:30 pm Night OWLS will be having their annual new volunteer training session so YOU can become a trained Night OWLS helper. Dinner will be provided!
Training (and future volunteering) will be at the Highland Park United Methodist Church (3300 Mockingbird Ln, Dallas, TX 75205) which is about 15 minutes from campus.
"Night OWLS (Out With Loving Sitters) is a respite program for children with special needs and their siblings. Children are paired with a helper for the evening. The trained helpers provide individualized care for each child and participate in preplanned activities and events according to each child’s interest." Night OWLS is a super fun program that has hosted dancers, magicians, and even a petting zoo at past respite nights! Additionally, respite nights are held on the 1st and 3rd Friday evening of every month from 6:00-10:00 PM. A volunteer can attend as many or as few respite nights as he/she desires depending on their schedule. There is no minimum required number of respite nights a volunteer must attend to be a part of this great program, however, you do have to be trained before you can volunteer with the kiddos!
The first volunteer opportunity will be on October 7th, and you will need to have attended the September training to volunteer for future events.
Anyone over the age of 18 is welcome to volunteer! For more information and for the application to submit to attend training, you can visit the Night OWLS website.
Warmly,
Your AIDD leaders
