AIDD @ UTSW-Awareness of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
Hello and welcome to our site!
We are a group of medical students at UT Southwestern Medical Center who are passionate about making a difference in the healthcare of those with an intellectual or developmental disability!
About one in six children has a developmental disability, and this means that those with some form of a developmental disability make up a large portion of our future patient population, young and old. AIDD is an organization aimed to raise awareness among medical students and healthcare professionals about those with developmental disabilities. This organization provides volunteer opportunities for students to interact one-on-one with individuals with various developmental disabilities in order to become more comfortable with this population and, thus, in the future, offer better healthcare to these individuals and their families. We will hold a series of lunch lectures through out the year which will allow students to learn about the biological underpinnings of specific developmental disabilities and the new research investigating the causality and therapies for various developmental disabilities. We are so fortunate to have the chance to hear from some of our very own UTSW clinicians who specialize in diagnosing and treating this population.
Have fun looking around the site!
Cheers,
Your AIDD leaders
